What is a state vehicle inspection?
Numerous states in the U.S. require vehicle inspections. These can include safety inspections, emissions inspections, or both. Safety inspections will often include checking components like your headlights, taillights, hazard lights, turn signal, license plate lights and brake lights. Emissions inspections, often referred to as smog tests, measure the level of pollutants in the exhaust your vehicle releases.
How often do you need a state vehicle inspection?
Vehicle inspection requirements vary by state, but are often required annually or every other year. Check with your state’s department of motor vehicles for state inspection requirements.
When you need a safety inspection?
All registered vehicles must get a safety inspection at a licensed inspection station
• Every 12 months
• When the ownership of the vehicle is transferred
A valid inspection sticker must be displayed on your vehicle. Inspections expire the last day of the month punched on the inspection sticker.
If your vehicle does not have a valid inspection
• You cannot renew the registration
• You can receive a fine
• You can receive a parking ticket
Most vehicles must also get an emissions inspection at the time of the safety inspection.
